    Created in 1973, the University of Aveiro (UAveiro) quickly became one of the most dynamic and innovative universities in Portugal. Attended by more than 16.000 students on undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, the UAveiro has achieved a significant position amongst higher education institutions in Portugal, being one of the top universities regarding the quality of its infrastructures, the strength of its research and the excellence of its staff. The University has now more than 16.000 students distributed by 16 Academic Departments and 4 Polytechnic Schools which work together in an inter-disciplinary manner according to their academic and research affinities. Its organization and matrix structure stimulate knowledge exchange and cross-contamination between knowledge fields, promoting a useful proximity between teaching and research.

    The University of Leicester is led by discovery and innovation – an international centre for excellence renowned for research, teaching and broadening access to higher education. Established in 1921, it is among the top 30 universities in the Times Higher Education's (THE) analysis of the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021 rankings, with 89% of research assessed as world-leading or internationally excellent and having wide-ranging impacts on society, health, culture, and the environment. In the recent THE World University Rankings 2026, the university ranked 26th globally for research quality. The university is home to more than 18,000 students and approximately 4,000 staff. Materials Innovation Centre (MatIC) – a research centre within the School of Engineering at the university and a long-term strategic partnership with TWI – is at the forefront of materials research into how properties and performance relate to the processing-dependent microstructures. MatIC is also developing computational models to relate microstructure to properties and performance.

    The Institute of Carboquimica (ICB-ICB-CSIC)

    The Institute of Carbochemistry (ICB) is Located on the Río Ebro University Campus in Zaragoza and develops its scientific activity in ​​Global Matter of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC). The ICB is composed of seven research groups, distributed across two departments: Energy and Environment y Chemical Processes and Nanotechnology being, well-equipped that places ICB at the forefront of European Research on advance carbon materials and energy storage. It is dedicated to responding to the major social and technological challenges of our time, particularly in CO2 capture, climate change, air pollution, waste recovery, hydrogen and renewable fuel production, development of new sensors, fuel cells, batteries, superconductors, and so on.     CiQUS is a Centro Singular at the University of Santiago de Compostela focused on molecular chemistry at the interface with biology and materials science. Considered as an expert in molecular and MOF-derived functional materials, porous carbons, metal-organic functional materials, comprehensive characterisation, and device-level electrochemical testing and device-level electrochemistry. As a mission, it has the capability to train new scientists, professionals and future leaders. Their biggest ambition is to be an international reference centre on excellent and interdisciplinary chemical research.

    Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU), Faculty of Science & Engineering, brings applied industry-facing strength in electrochemistry, advanced materials, additive manufacturing and scale-up innovation. MMU hosts active research groups in electrochemistry, materials science, additive manufacturing, and sustainable energy technologies, demonstrating a strong institutional commitment to advancing engineering and materials innovation.

    It has about 9 undergraduate and 5 postgraduate programmes, and includes staff with strong track records in supercapacitors, batteries, carbon materials and device engineering. MUU aims to equip a new generation of engineers and researchers with the practical and interdisciplinary skills needed to drive the global transition toward cleaner, safer, and more sustainable energy systems.

    The Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M), particularly through its Department of Materials Science and Engineering and Chemical Engineering, pioneering research in functional and structural materials, nanostructured surfaces, electrochemical systems, and metallic alloys, with applications across batteries, fuel cells, and supercapacitors. UC3M hosts advanced laboratories for materials synthesis, surface engineering, mechanical testing, and electrochemical characterization.

    Through its strategic focus on innovation, sustainability, and industrial applicability, UC3M invests in educating multidisciplinary engineers and scientists capable of developing safe, affordable, and high-performance energy technologies. The university offers Bachelor´s degrees, and well as Master´s and PhD programmes in fields related with Materials Science and Engineering, Industrial Engineering, and Chemical Engineering, featuring specialized modules in nanomaterials, energy storage, corrosion, and advanced manufacturing.

    Is a leading European research centre in energy storage, specializing in electrochemical (batteries, supercapacitors) and thermal energy storage technologies. The centre’s EES area combines deep expertise in materials design, cell engineering, and advanced characterization with a strong industrial and innovative focus. Concerning research training facilities, it has access to shared infrastructures (Battery testing Platform, Characterization Centre, and Pilot lines), ensuring competitive doctoral training to acquire high-level technical competencies in nest-generation energy storage development, and contributing to the competitiveness of companies.

    Materials Division

    Is an Italian startup founded in 2020 (originated from a 2018 university project) in Modena, Emilia-Romagna, specializing in the development of next-generation supercapacitors, especially pouch-format, shape-adaptable, high-power devices aimed at mobility (automotive, aerospace, micromobility) and industrial applications. Materials Division is responsible for the design and manufacturing advanced electrode and electrolyte materials for shape-adaptable supercapacitors and battery applications.

    Their core value proposition is to have enhanced durability and safety, leveraging the extensive know-how developed over the years. Novac is already moving towards pilot/pre-pilot production lines for their supercapacitors, demonstrating a valuable understanding in scale-up, process integration, industrial constraints and device packaging.

    DTU Energy is a research and education department dedicated to sustainable energy technologies, representing world-class expertise spanning from functional materials, to components and systems for energy conversion and storage, more specifically in batteries, electrolysis, fuel cells, power-to-X, thermal energy storage and materials modelling, The department also plays a strong role in educating engineering students being responsible for the BSc programme in General Engineering and the MSc program in Sustainable Energy.

    Chemical Process & Energy Resources Institute (CPERI)

    Is one of the five constituent institutes of the Centre for Research & Technology – Hellas (CERTH) based in Thessaloniki, Greece. CPERI was formed in 2012 by the merger of the Chemical Process Engineering Research Institute (founded 1985) with the Institute for Solid Fuels Technology & Applications (ISFTA). Is a leading Greek RTD institute in clean energy, materials, process engineering and energy storage.

    Its mission is to is to conduct high caliber basic and applied research, to develop novel technologies and products and to pursue scientific and technological excellence in selected advanced areas of Chemical Engineering, including Clean Energy, Environment and Climate, Sustainable Industry and Bioengineering, in response to the needs of in European industrial and productive sector. The main target is to promote modern technologies for the low-carbon production, storage and capture of energy and novel technologies for natural resource management, pollution, environmental protection and health.
